CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2017
The Queer Acts Theatre Festival is seeking submissions for the festival’s 2017 edition, running July 12-16, 2017. Deadline for submissions is October 3, 2016.
ABOUT QUEER ACTS
The Queer Acts Theatre Festival is an annual LGBTQ+ performance event held each summer during the first five days of the Halifax Pride Festival. With exceptional line-ups and as the only LGBTQ+ theatre festival in the Atlantic provinces, the event is popular with audiences and performers alike. The festival’s goals are to showcase LGBTQ+ performance-art, provide artists with an opportunity to present their work to an engaged audience, and to offer our audiences the best in professional and emerging LGBTQ+ theatrical talent and work. The ninth annual Queer Acts Theatre Festival will take place at The Bus Stop Theatre and various locations in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 12-16, 2017.
Queer Acts seeks submissions of live productions with queer themes and content. Everything from comedy, drama, theatre for young audiences, cabaret, musical theatre, puppetry, clown, spoken word, multimedia, storytelling, and stand-up are welcome. Work that addresses sexuality, gender, race, social injustice, feminism, and activism are encouraged.
HOW TO APPLY
Interested individuals and groups are asked to submit an electronic proposal with the following details included:
• A short summary of the project and its relevance to the queer community
• Excerpts or a completed script
• A bio of the company and/or confirmed artists, including their role with the project
• A list of the artists required to be in Halifax during the production run
• General technical requirements
• Anticipated run time
• Any additional support material you wish to provide
Please send proposals in Word or PDF format. Links to online video content are welcome. The Queer Acts Festival Director will assess proposals. Remuneration will be decided upon with the selected participants, all of whom will be asked to provide the festival with a complete production as described.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Typically Queer Acts presents five to seven shows a year, offering each show technical, promotional, and box office support. Selected productions typically run 30-75 minutes and are offered three to four performances in a 60 seat black box theatre. You are not required to bring a stage manager as a Queer Acts technician will assist with the technical rehearsal and running the show. Change-over time between performances may be limited, so shows will need to accommodate a festival schedule, setting, and lighting plot. Queer Acts will be responsible for blanket promotion of the festival, including festival posters, program guide, and press releases, but artists are welcome and encouraged to undertake their own publicity activities.
Submission proposals must be sent by email on or before October 3, 2016 to email@example.com. Artists invited to participate in the festival will be contacted by November 30, 2016.
EMERGING QUEER ARTISTS PROGRAM
Queer Acts is seeking one Nova Scotia based young person age 17-25 to take part in the Emerging Queer Artists Program. This program pairs a young queer performing artist and an established dramaturge/director for the purpose of creating a short new one-person show to be presented at next year’s Queer Acts Theatre Festival. Interested individuals are asked to email Adam Reid, Festival Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
